Look out, world. She’s on the move.

“I’m alive, awake, alert, enthusiastic!”

My daughter came home from summer school music class a couple weeks ago singing this horribly annoying inspiring song. You, too, can replay this gem over and over and over and over again in your head, or better yet, for the enjoyment of your friends and family: simply put the lyrics to the tune of “If you’re happy and you know it.”

I’ll admit… When I first heard her sing it, I thought it was a beautiful, enlightened thing. When I can genuinely say “I’m alive, awake, alert, and enthusiastic” at any given moment, well, then, I will have it all figured out. I have even been stopping every now and then and testing myself. I take a deep breath, play the stupid song in my head, and feel refreshed, truly alive, fully present.

But sometimes, this is how it plays: “I’m alive dead, awake asleep, alert apathetic, enthusiastic and I don’t give a sh*t!”

And that’s fun, too.

My parents are here, visiting from Arizona. We are having lots of fun, but get this: My mom had the nerve to show up in the land of deep-fried cheese curds wearing a size 4, and sporting some killer biceps. I would either be happy for, proud of, or angry at her… if I weren’t scared of her. Check her out!
